The Glycemic Index is a concept developed in the University of Toronto in 1981. The purpose of the Glycemic Index is to measure the effect carbohydrates have on blood glucose levels. The Glycemic Index is imperative for anyone who needs to monitor their glucose level due to diabetes or hyperglycemia. With diabetes reaching epidemic levels in the United States, the development of the Glycemic Index could not have come at a better time. Each year, more people are diagnosed with this potentially life threatening disease that can cause many serious complications. It is important for anyone with this condition to familiarize themselves with the Glycemic Index so they can empower themselves and learn which foods should be avoided.

Surprisingly, although a candy bar scores in the medium classification of the glycemic index, it is not as harmful as those carbohydrates that score in the high glycemic index range. These include corn flakes, white rice, white bread and baked potato. In other words, it is easier for a diabetic to digest a candy bar than a baked potato.

Other foods are rated high on the Glycemic Index. These foods currently have high ratings and raise the blood glucose level quickly. High glycemic foods can be beneficial for people who are recovering from high exertion or those suffering from hypoglycemia. People with Type I or Type II Diabetes should avoid high glycemic foods as they can play havoc with the insulin or medication they are taking.

Examples of foods that considered high glycemic foods include corn flakes, white rices such as jasmine rice, white breads and baked potatoes. People who have diabetes, either Type I or Type II, should avoid these foods as much as possible.

Diabetes is not a death sentence at all. It is simply a condition that many people possess that does not allow their body to break down sugars and starches through their system so that they digest normally. Diabetes is harmful to an individual who does not follow the advice of their physician, does not consume a proper diet and does not monitor their blood glucose levels. People who adhere to the medical guidelines concerning diabetes have just as much of a chance of living a normal life as anyone else.

How to use the glycemic index

One way on how to use the Glycemic Index is to learn which carbohydrates are better for those who are trying to either watch their carbohydrate intake or who are on a diabetic diet. Some foods, such as fruits and certain vegetables, are low on the glycemic index and take a longer time to absorb into the bloodstream, giving the body the benefit of the nutrients while allowing the body to expel the glucose in a more natural way. One caveat when it comes to fruits and vegetables is that baked potatoes are not considered in the low group in the Glycemic Index.

Intermediate carbohydrates in the Glycemic Index include foods with a rating from 56 to 69. These include candy bars, some brown rices and croissants. This an be invaluable news to someone who is learning to develop a diabetic diet but who is unaware of what foods rank high and rank low.

Diabetes does not have to be a problem especially if you are unfortunate to be diagnosed with the condition. As much has been researched about diabetes, and the new dietary information means that you can still enjoy a varied diet. An excellent method of reducing the symptoms of diabetes is by controlling what types of food you eat, this is also a good method if you want to avoid diabetes in the first place. Using approved and regulated diabetic recipes; the task of staying on top of the condition becomes less of a burden.

One of the hardest things to do will be to stick with your diabetic diet to shed those unnecessary pounds as maintaining your weight is extremely important when you’re a diabetic. Eating food from the four main food groups and sticking to your diabetic diet will help you with your diabetes.

Two complications associated with diabetes are heart disease and strokes but by sticking to your diabetic diet plan you should reduce the risk of having these problems. Diabetic recipes are designed to be healthy, ensuring a low fat diabetic diet which should help with some of the familiar symptoms associated with the condition such as blurred vision, low energy levels and constant thirst.

The average diabetic menu consists of foods like fruit, vegetables, lean meat, poultry, beans, whole grains, fish and non-fat dairy foods in a balanced diet The low-carb diabetic dietary plans are a little different and only certain vegetables are allowed such as kidney beans, carrots and avocados as well as fish, meat, poultry, cheese and eggs. Saturated fats and cholesterol are a problem if you are a diabetic so you would need to follow diabetic recipes that cut down on foods like this and eat skinless poultry as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.

A diabetic is not just about eating the right foods, as it is also important that the amount consumed is correct to ensure the calorific intake is not too high, so weighing the food will become second nature. Using the food labels in the supermarkets will also become second nature when you are preparing your diabetic recipes as they contain useful information, usually based on a diet of 2,000 calories per day.

When on a 2,000-calorie diabetic diet plan, the ideal breakfast should consist of two slices of bread or two rice cakes or half a cup of pasta, one cup of skimmed milk or a cup of sugar-free yogurt, one egg in any form, boiled or poached or scrambled and surely a serving of one’s favorite fruit. In a 1,800 calorie diabetic diet plan, diabetic recipes might suggest that the breakfast should ideally consist of two slices of bread, a cup of skimmed milk, one serving of a fruit like a medium-sized banana, apple or an orange, and a tablespoon of cheese.

The afternoon snack can consist of a fruit, two to three crackers, and half a cup of tea or coffee made with artificial sweetener. Alternatively, to vary your diabetic diet you could always have a cup of skimmed milk or yoghurt to replace the tea or coffee. There is no reason for you to believe that you can no longer enjoy your food if you’re restricted to a diabetic diet, because diabetic recipes are designed to have plenty of variety.

Many people often hate to go on a diabetic diet, even if they have diabetes, because they feel they will only be allowed to eat all the bland boring foods that contain no sugar and taste awful. This is not true. Diabetics can still eat the foods they already enjoy eating. All they have to do is learn how to shop for foods by learning how to read labels and choose the same foods, sometimes using different brands.

We have all been a diet at some point in our lives and most of the time the diet does not work nor does it last very long because the so called diet calls for us to eat foods that we are not used to eating. This is the main reason most diets fail. However, a diabetic does not have the option to quit a diabetic diet as the results could mean death. The diabetic diet does not have to be tortuous as I will show you how to shop for foods that you normally eat using these 5 methods when reading the nutritional label.

One way to shop for food on a diabetic diet is to watch the amount total carbohydrates that the food items contain. Many diabetics believe that eating sugar items is the only thing that will raise your blood sugar level, but carbohydrates will also do that very same job. This is why you need to keep a close eye on the total carbohydrates that are in each serving. A good guide is to only purchase items with 10 total carbohydrates or less because it only takes 1 carbohydrate to raise your blood sugar level by 5 points.

A second way is to focus on foods that are high in fiber. Fiber works great at lowering your blood sugar level and keeping it at a normal level. Your body does not actually absorb the fiber even though it is a type of a carbohydrate, which is why this is good for your diabetic diet. You should try to look for products that have at least 5 grams of dietary fiber.

A third way is to look for products that have as little sugar as possible. Many people feel that a sugar free label means that they can eat that product on a diabetic diet, but you have to be very careful and read the label. Some sugar free products compromise by adding more carbohydrates which eventually raise your blood sugar level. The overall total carbohydrates still needs to be 10 grams or less and the sugar should be around 5 grams or less.

A fourth way is to stock up on what the experts call free foods for diabetics. These are foods that have less than 20 total calories and have less than 5 grams of total carbohydrates per serving. Just because they are labeled free food does not mean you can eat them all day long. All it means is you can eat them up to 3 servings per day. Also be sure to spread them throughout the day as eating them all at one time will make your blood sugar rise too high. Some examples of free foods are decaf coffee, a dill pickle (which also helps lower your blood sugar), sugar free drink mixes, sugar free gelatin, diet soda, lettuce, and water.

A fifth way to shop for food on a diabetic diet is to look for products that are low in fat or contain no fat at all. You should try to purchase meats that contain at least 7 percent or less in fat. Some good meats that you can buy are skinless poultry, shellfish, and fish.

As you can see, it is possible to go on a diabetic diet and still enjoy the foods and meals you are accustomed to eating. All you have to learn to do is read the food labels a little more carefully and purchase the products that have fewer carbohydrates, more fiber, less sugar, more free foods, and better quality meats. Once you start implementing these food purchasing habits into your meal planning, your meals that you and your family love will become healthier you will enjoy them more knowing that it is now a diabetic diet meal.

High levels of sugar and diabetes don’t mix. If you have diabetes and miss the sugar in your former diet then consider looking into sugar substitutes or sugar-free candies so that you can have the sweetness of sugar and control your diabetes more easily at the same time. For those who are newly diagnosed or are worried about whether or not they may have symptoms of diabetes, you can visit endocrineweb.com for more information on the disease itself.

Sugar Is Not Completely Taboo

Although doctors used to say that people with diabetes couldn’t consume sugar and sweets at all, the no-sugar stance has softened. People now understand that the human body breaks complex carbohydrates like starches down into the form of sugar usable by the body, glucose, as part of the normal metabolic process. If you eat grains, corn, or bread for example, it will be converted glucose in the end. It’s just a matter of how quickly it enters your bloodstream.

What this means is that you can have diabetes and still enjoy sugar in the form of donuts or chocolate bars. However, you must maintain strict blood glucose levels by cutting back on others foods and taking insulin. Always, always consult your doctor first and ask if your diet can be adjusted and how to go about it safely.

Sweet Sugar Substitutes

You may be leery of going back to pure sugar and want to avoid common sugars like fructose (fruit sugars) or sucrose (table sugar). If you are, consider trying a sugar substitute instead. Common substitutes like Nutrasweet or saccharin can replace sugar in your coffee or tea.

However, neither Nutrasweet nor saccharin is suited for baking or cooking. On the other hand, Splenda (chemical name: sucralose) can be used for making baked goods, but it still doesn’t work quite as well as real sugar. Just be aware that some Splenda products do have sugar in them, so read the label carefully.

Another option to consider is a sugar alcohol like mannitol and so forth. While sugar alcohols do partially convert into sugar, unlike Nutrasweet, saccharin and Splenda, the amount is fairly low and much of the sugar alcohol remains in an unabsorbed form. Sugar alcohols are usually used by manufacturers of candies and so forth.

Be warned: If you consume a candy or food product containing a sugar alcohol, it may cause cramping, bloating, or other intestinal upset. In summary, diabetes doesn’t mean the end of your life, and it shouldn’t keep you from enjoying your favorite things. If you practice moderation, follow your doctor’s instructions, and take your medication, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Healthy eating is important to everyone, but especially to people with diabetes as failure to maintain and appropriate blood sugar level can have disastrous effects on their health, creating long-term problems. Many with the disease realize the need for healthy eating and use diabetic recipes during all their meals.

One of the toughest aspects of preparing diabetic recipes is converting to the lifestyle and as with most diets people may fall off them occasionally. Being on a diet to lose weight can be hard enough, but being on a nutritional diet due to diabetes can be hazardous to your health if you fail to maintain your proper balance of foods.

One of the keys to being on a strict diet is understanding that sugar is sugar regardless if the source is added sugar or through sugar naturally occurring in foods. Over time this knowledge will help you make intelligent choices concerning your foods and the condiments you use on it as well as how to exchange different items in the food groups to maintain eating nothing but diabetic recipes.

Plan Meals Around Health Needs

Planning diabetic recipes is not that much different than other types of meals, with the obvious exception of greatly reducing the caloric and sugar content in the foods going into the meals. How many calories allowed per day will be determined by you and your doctor ad whether you need to lose weight, stay the same or maybe gain weight. What types of food in your diet will also be determined by the same three factors, but with diabetic recipes certain types should be avoided.

Since diabetes involves controlling the amount of sugar in the blood stream, reducing your sugar intake is a primary consideration in diabetic recipes as well as the starches and other naturally occurring food ingredients that your body converts into the sugar. Sure, it is great to have something sweet occasionally, and just about everyone can, as long as it is planned as part of diabetic recipes included into your diet.

Eating whole grain foods is better for you than processed foods, regardless of the reason it is part of your diet, as whole foods are processed by your body faster and more completely than processed foods, such as rice. Brown rice is highly recommended more than the processed white rice, regardless of what it is being used for, such as part of a main dish or a side dish.

Diabetic menus don’t have to be boring and bland, and you can even work in sweet treats with proper monitoring! From Mexican food to a plain-old seared steak, with research and consultation with your physician, everyone can add foods that they love to their diabetic menus.

Places To Go

For those planning diabetic menus, a good site to visit for ideas and actual menus for various occasions is diabetic-recipes.com. With over 800 recipes to choose from, there’s sure to be something that you’ll really enjoy, and they provide suggested meal plans to help you determine the proper breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, and so forth.

Of course, you absolutely must consult with your physician and dietitian to determine exactly what’s right for you, including getting the proper amount of calories. At diabetic-recipes.com, there are even diabetic menus for special occasions. For example, one dinner menu listed is called A Valentine’s Dinner for Two.

It includes delicious-sounding items like Beef Medallions with Shiitake Mushroom Sauce with ingredients like garlic, shallots, and white wine. This Valentine’s Day menu even includes a dessert made with fresh strawberries, yum!

You can even browse recipes by various categories, such as pizza. They have a couple of interesting recipes such as a pizza with sun-dried tomatoes, or one with grilled chicken. For those who are skilled enough chefs, you can probably even adapt the basic recipes to create something with more zing like a Thai-inspired version, or a Tandoori chicken version for example.

Sweet Treats For The Diabetic

As long as you’re creative, the possibilities are endless! That goes not just for pizza, but even for sweets. At cooks.com, you can find recipes in every category for everyone, including items that fit into diabetic menus. For example, they have a basic recipe for a diabetic vanilla ice cream that replaces sugar with the artificial sweetener with Sweet & Low.

All you have to do is take the basic recipe and throw in anything you want to create your own version. You can add strawberries or chocolate for example, as long as you keep your meal plan in mind and adjust accordingly to account for extra sugar, fats, etc.

Just keep in mind that if you add in one area, you’ll have to subtract from somewhere else and maintain balanced numbers. You may also want to experiment with using Splenda instead of Sweet & Low.

Fortunately, making ice cream is probably a little more forgiving than baking, which is an extremely precise art that involves accurate measurement of ingredients. Still, this shows that with creative thinking and effort, people can add some of their favorite foods back into their diabetic menus.

Finding a list of foods to eat that makes up a good diabetic food can be pretty exhausting and is best achieved if one understands which items can safely be categorized as diabetic foods and place them in a simple and limited category, rather than having an unending list that goes on and on. If one considers general foods, the diabetic food would consist of whole grains, beans as well as legumes, plenty of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, eggs and meats, and also fish and shellfish.

General Foods, Processed Foods, Seasonings And Herbs

Vegetables as well as fruits are most suitable as diabetic food particularly, slow digestive fruits and vegetables are ideally suitable and should contain sufficient fiber and one should eat even the peel of the apple as well as combine it with small doses of protein and fats.

For processed foods, whole foods are especially suitable to be used as diabetic food and a healthy eating plan might include frozen entrees, prepared salads as well as canned soups. Soups could be barley, lentil, minestrone and chicken, while prepared salads include egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, as well as bean salad and vegetable toasted salad. Good processed foods that could be considered as being diabetic food include sugar-free gelatin, sugar-free hard candies, sugar-free chocolates and sugar-free gum.

For condiments, one may consider sugar-free jams and jellies, mayonnaise, mustard, salsa, creamer, margarine, butter and vinegar. And, for beverages one could drink mineral water, club soda, diet soft drinks, diet drink mixes, and coffee and tea.

There are also plenty of good seasonings and herbs that make good diabetic food and there is hardly any restriction to amounts as well as types of dried herbs that may be used. These herbs are good and beneficial substitutes to the sugar that may not be present in a recipe and flavored extracts, garlic, hot sauce, horseradish as well as Worcestershire sauce can make effective seasonings that may be used in diabetic food.

It is also possible to create one’s own sweet treats by using sweeteners rather than cane sugar that has high carbohydrates. Some recommended sweeteners one can use for diabetic food are Sucralose, Aspartame, Acesulfame K, saccharin, and Stevia. Remember that these sweeteners should be used frugally and for those that have phenylketouuria, they need to avoid aspartame that contains phenylalanine.

You should also remember to limit your calorie intake and it should fall between 1600 calories and 2800 calories, especially when eating a well prepared diabetic food serving. The exact number of servings one eats depends on goals, calorie as well as nutrition needs and the person’s lifestyle.

After being diagnosed with diabetes it is important to start on a diabetic diet plan. This is because a good diabetic diet plan is essential to preventing complications connected to diabetes whether type 1 or type 2. Complications such as eye, kidney and nerve diseases that often arise after being diagnosed with diabetes can all be prevented with a healthy diet plan and regular exercise. Following on such a diet does not mean you have to totally abstain from sugars. This type of diet plan is more about regulation and is not restrictive at all, but you will have to make changes to your normal diet.

What To Eat

First let’s look at what you should have your diet. A very important component of your diet is fiber. Increasing fiber in a diabetic diet plan will help to slow down digestion and help in absorbing nutrients. This is very important in a diabetic diet plan because it steadies the stream of glucose being released into the blood stream. Fiber also absorbs bile acids that when left alone is converted into blood cholesterol.

Another important thing to include in your new diabetic diet plan is lots of water. Drinking more than the usual prescribed amount of eight glasses is a good idea. Dehydration will increase blood sugar levels so avoiding dehydration is very important.

The Bad

A diabetic diet plan should have reduced amounts of salt. This is because diabetics face developing hypertension and reducing sodium intake can help with preventing this. Research has led to the idea that caffeine reduces insulin sensitivity, because of this it is a good idea to reduce the amount of coffee and soft drinks that contain caffeine to better manage the disease. Especially for those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Timing And Portions

Timing and portion size also play an important part in implementing a diabetic diet plan. Rather than having three main meals that are big in size with no snack in between it is preferable to space out several small meals throughout the day. It is also important to keep the time of your meals regular. If you have a big breakfast one day and a small one the next day your blood sugar levels fluctuate too much.

You should also never skip meals or snacks, you risk letting your blood sugar levels dipping, which is to be avoided. As much as it may seem like a pain to have to continually watch when and what you eat the benefits far outweigh any disadvantages you may find to this new way of eating. You should talk to your physician for a more detailed understanding of what makes a good diabetic diet plan.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the body is unable to produce insulin and/or use the insulin available in the body; insulin is a hormone that is necessary by the body in order to convert the daily food intake and most importantly sugar into energy that we need in order to be able to function.

The Requirements Of A diabetic diet

The most important factor in a diabetic diet is to ensure that the insulin levels and thus, the sugar levels are constant. In order to do that you need to watch your diet closely but by no means restrict yourself from eating what you enjoy. It is a common myth that diabetics cannot eat majority types of foods; a diabetic diet is eating moderately but not excluding all together eating your favorite types of dishes.

There are several types of ways to help yourself keep a close watch on your diabetic diet without feeling that you are missing on any of the good stuff for example, checking your blood sugar as often as possible with a portable device, which is believed to be pain free and therefore easier to use even after every meal or snack. Educate yourself about the type of diabetes you have and ensure you are in control of it and not the other way around.

In the beginning you may want to seek the help of a qualified physician in order to draw out your first diabetic diet according to your present state of health, which will direct most of the terms in your present diet. It is important you learn what types of food you should watch the amount you eat and which types are safe for example, fruits always are safe to eat but don’t forget that they to contain sugar and in large amounts they can increase your blood sugar levels.

Regular Check Ups

Regular check ups will help you keep maintain a constant diet as well as set a pattern to follow without feeling that you are being retrained from eating different types of food. A diabetic diet also ensures that you loose excess weight, which promotes high blood sugar.

With the right diabetic diet you will be able to maintain your sugar levels as well as your weight constant and that will provide you with a shapely body, healthy life style and a longer life in the long run. Diabetes is not curable but with the advances technology and science at our fingertips we can keep it under control successfully and therefore, all those who have diabetes can have the chance to live a full and happy life.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that will keep your diabetes in control is sometimes difficult and daunting. It is even more difficult when you have diabetes and a family and you are in charge of the cooking. Does everyone have to eat bland food just because your diet needs changing? Or what about if you are the only one in the family who has diabetes and allowances need to be made to everyone else’s diets for you?

Don’t let the disease make you feel isolated. Rather use it as a way to bring your family closer for the support that you need. Cooking everyday meals with diabetes recipes is a great way to keep your health in check and is also a great way to keep the family healthy too.

Flavorful Food

If you’ve just been diagnosed with diabetes you might think that you are in for a lifetime of food that has no salt or sugar in it. Although people with diabetes are advised to reduce sodium intake, completely eliminating sugar from your diet is not necessary. It is still possible to have food that is healthy and tasty.

Using diabetes recipes it is possible to find foods your whole family will enjoy and still ensure that you are still following the doctor’s orders. What’s more you will probably be able to find diabetes recipes of the foods you’ve enjoyed all this while with a few alterations.

Great For Everyone

A diabetes recipe is no different from an ordinary recipe, there are just a few ingredients such as salt that might be omitted and some extra ingredients that are high in fibre that might sneak up in a diabetes recipe. These little changes however are not only good for the diabetic in the family but for the whole family. These recipes are just basically healthier versions of the originals.

In fact there are even such a thing as diabetes recipes for desserts. You can have your cake and eat it too! The sugar in diabetes dessert recipes might be reduced but they are still yummy. Using diabetes recipes in your cooking might actually help your family from developing diabetes if the disease runs in the family. Anyone who has pre diabetes would really benefit from this change in diet. Cooking in the same way for everyone won’t make you feel excluded and at the same time might unwittingly help your family.
